Common Core StandardsCommon Core State Standards (CCSS) establish learning goals for English Language Arts students and the literacy proficiencies for students in history/social studies, science, and technical subject areas. The CCSS for grade 6 and above are predicated on having teachers from different content areas combine their area content knowledge expertise to help students develop the literacy skills and understandings required for college and career readiness across multiple disciplines. The 6–12 literacy standards in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects do not replace content standards in these content areas, but rather, are intended to supplement them.

In terms of their organization, the Common Core State Standards for ELA are grouped into:

  • Strands: larger groups of related standards. Standards from different strands may sometimes be closely related.
  • College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards (CCR) provide the subcategories for each strand that are identical across all grades. Each CCR anchor standard has an accompanying grade-specific standard translating the broader CCR statement into grade-appropriate end-of-year expectations.
  • Standards: tightly focused statements that carefully define what students should understand and be able to do in English/Language Arts at particular grade levels and in individual high school courses.

The Tennessee Curriculum Center mirrors this organization of these standards and includes a resource collection that is aligned to both the Common Core and the current Tennessee Curriculum Standards for English/Language Arts.

Common Core/Tennessee Crosswalks

The Eight K-12 English/Language Arts Content Standards help to ensure that all Tennessee students gain the reading and language skills needed to succeed in school, the workplace, and in their lives. Tennessee’s ELA Curriculum Framework reinforces the idea that since learning is developmental, students at every grade level should apply similar language skills and concepts to increasingly complex materials to build and refine their knowledge and gain independence.

Content standards are interdependent and interweave skills and concepts to support student learning so that at any one time, students are reading and writing, viewing and discussing, and interpreting and presenting to develop mastery of key ELA skills and concepts.

Resources found at the Tennessee ELA Curriculum Center can help teachers to develop instructional plans both across and within grade levels and courses that are carefully aligned with the State ELA Curriculum Framework.

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.
